BAD NEWS...At the Cultural Heritage Commission meeting on September 18, 2008, the commission voted  2 yes/2no on the application to preserve the Glen View Garden Apartments. Commissioner Mia Lehrer, who could have cast the deciding vote did not attend, so the motion to declare the property an historic-cultural movement was defeated.
Thanks to the many neighbors who did attend the meeting and spoke eloquently of the building's merits and the many more who e-mailed their support. The GGPNC is studying what options are available in light of today's disappointing outcome.
WE NEED YOUR HELP TO
SAVE THE GLEN VIEW GARDEN APARTMENTS

In June the GGPNC applied to have the Glen View Garden apartments named a city Historic-Cultural Monument. The 22 units were built in 1936 and 1938 at 1801-1817 New Hampshire Avenue. They are wonderful examples of the fast disappearing style developed here in Los Angeles. Lushly landscaped, even including a central fountain, the complex is an early example of the Hollywood Regency Style that flourished in the immediate post World War II period.         Both the original owner and architect had strong community ties and had collaborated in building the once popular, but now long gone Hollymont Market which was demolished to build the Los Feliz Post Office on Vermont. Alas, the Cultural Heritage Commission (CHC) staff report concluded the buildings were not worthy of being given historic protection.

That puts the burden on the neighborhood to show strong support for saving the project before the final vote is taken at the Cultural Heritage Commission meeting  Thursday, September 18th, at 10am Room 350 of City Hall.

Even if you can't make the meeting, you can make the CHC aware of your support for saving the Glen View Garden Apartments. Please send an e-mail or letter to both the CHC and Councilmember Tom LaBonge who has expressed support for preserving the buildings.

THE ALTERNATIVE

If the efforts to get historic protection fail, a developer plans to demolish a gracious bit of old Los Feliz and replace it with building shown above.
Which would you like in our neighborhood?
